The Pogues didn’t cover a Pogues song for Shane MacGowan’s tribute album. They went back further, to “Gabrielle” by Shane’s pre-Pogues punk band The Nips, with Spider Stacy on lead vocal. It released Friday, November 13 on 20th Century Paddy: The Songs of Shane MacGowan (Rubyworks).
Curator Victoria Mary Clarke told The Irish News the pick was hers: “there wasn’t much point in getting The Pogues to do a Pogues song.” Her verdict? “They absolutely crushed it,” and Spider’s is “probably the best vocal I’ve ever heard him do.”
Spider himself told The Guardian the band won’t make new original music without Shane. “Possibly some Irish stuff.”
The 36-track set also carries Dropkick Murphys’ “The Body of an American”, with at least half of artist royalties going to the Dublin Simon Community.
