Interview: Muirsheen Durkin & Friends on Bunch Of Bastards, The Pogues and Beamish

Arnsberg’s Muirsheen Durkin & Friends have been hammering out Celtic folk-punk since 2010, with bagpipes, AN OVERFLOWING stage and a T-shirt motto borrowed from The Skels. Their new album, Bunch Of Bastards, has been out worldwide since September 19th, eight years after 11 Pints & 3 Shots, with a green marbled vinyl edition out November 16th and a home-turf release party on November 28th We sent over a few questions, and Lanze, MacRünker and Kentop came back with Pogues confessions, a beer verdict nobody saw coming and a question of their own for us.

Muirsheen Durkin and Friends: 11 Pints & 3 Shots

June 25, 2018

Muirsheen Durkin and Friends might be the biggest band in the whole Celtic-punk universe! The Arnsberg, Germany based outfit list an incredible 10 members including two frigging pipers!!! I’ve really enjoyed listening to Muirsheen’s latest full length offering, 11 Pints & 3 Shots, straight ahead, high energy, rowdy Celtic-punk’n’roll with a nice mix of original and traditional – Wild Mountain Thyme and Donald Where’s Your Troosers? from the Scottish traditional, Old Maui, the sea song some of you will know through the Dreadnoughts and the bagpipers favorite, Itchy Fingers. Nice to see a band list the Skels as a influence as well as the more obvious Pogues and The Rumjacks (Botany Bay Reggae is a major nod towards our Aussie friends). Check this out (or ooot as they say in Glasga).

Muirsheen Durkin and Friends: Drink With The Irish

February 8, 2015

Despite the somewhat doggy looking Leprechaun cover and the title of this the latest five track EP from Germany’s Muirsheen Durkin and Friends, Drink with the Irish is a very, very good release. The first three tracks are dueling bagpipe’n’punk rock originals and as good as anything coming out of the big boys of the scene. I must give a special mention to “The Pogues and Whiskey”, a stunningly great homage to Kings Cross finest. The two covers are Danny Boy and Loch Lomond, both given the Celtic-punk treatment. A great release and well worth tracking down.

Muirsheen Durkin & Friends: Last Orders

June 24, 2013

I always though Muirsheen Durkin went west to California to strike gold but it looks like he actually went east to Germany – maybe it was the fine Fraulein’s and the Furstenberg – picking up some mates to play the Irish pub(s) of Arnsberg. Like a lot of German bands playing Celtic-punk the tracks are almost entirely covers of traditions Irish standard (and a Skels cover!!!) given a Teutonic punk-rock kick up the ass – no complaints here as LAST ORDERS of full of energy and highly enjoyable.
