Third Class Party: Mia Callaghan, Paddy Maguire and Jones Murphy

Germany & Central Europe Scene Report: Third Class Party Rise From the Paddyhats’ Wreckage and Mr. Irish Bastard Hit 20

Our tour of the regional scenes crosses the water for the first time: Germany and Central Europe, from Münster to Munich and Bern to Utrecht. No corner of the planet outside Boston grows Celtic punk bands like this one, and this month’s big story is a comeback.

Third Class Party are what climbed out of the wreckage of The O’Reillys and the Paddyhats. When the Gevelsberg band fell apart in January, fiddler Mia Callaghan, singer Paddy Maguire and drummer Jones Murphy were among those who walked. On October 23 the three went public as a stripped-down trio: fiddle, guitar, drums and two voices. The name comes from the steerage decks of the old ocean liners, where the folk with nothing had the best music. They told Nordmensch in Concerts that a first single is coming before the year is out, and their booker already has them down for Cologne’s Hexenkessel on October 23, 2027.

Mr. Irish Bastard turn 20 this year and the Münster crew are celebrating the only way they know how, on the road. The Bloodshot & Undefeated tour hits Musikzentrum Hannover on November 6, Pints im Pott 3 at Matrix Bochum on November 28 and a hometown night at Skaters Palace, Münster, on December 11. Then the St. Patrick’s Day Bash returns: Turock Essen (March 11), Das Bett Frankfurt (March 12) and Backstage Munich (March 13), plus Aladin Music-Hall Bremen on March 25. Catch up first with this year’s Kiss Me on St. Patrick’s Day EP and the singles “Murder in an Irish Pub” and “Spread My Ashes in the Guinness Lounge”.

In Switzerland, the Musigburg in Aarburg has its St. Patrick’s Day Irish Festival on sale for March 19 and 20, 2027. Friday pairs The Real McKenzies with Langenthal’s own Tortilla Flat, bagpipe-armed punks since 1991. Saturday belongs to Ticino’s The Vad Vuc, going since Christmas Day 2000, and The Galway Hookers.
