Hamburg shantypunks Whistling on Deck are out with Sinking The Irish Rover, a new five-track EP on Bandcamp that follows last year’s Messmates.
It’s all salt and tar: banjo, accordion, mandolin and gang vocals, in English and German. “Post-Nautical Depression” is for anyone stranded ashore after a voyage. “Rosen unterm Reetdach” is a bleak North German tale of a mother and a drowned, nameless son. “Aporcalypse” has orcas, turtles and a giant squid taking revenge on the whalers.
“All Hands” takes the piss out of corporate waffle, and “Messmates (Swaying in the Galley)” is back aboard, the galley speakers still blasting the Dreadnoughts and Flogging Molly.
Catch them at Finnegan Irish Pub in Lübeck on October 30, Hamilton’s Irish Pub in Lüneburg on December 11 and the Irish Rover in Hamburg on December 18.
