Philadelphia Celtic rock band Jamison on stage under coloured lights in front of a crowd

Philly & Mid-Atlantic Scene Report: Celtic Christmas at 16, a Timonium Hooley and Scythian’s Ugly Sweaters

Next stop on our tour of the regional scenes: Philadelphia and the Mid-Atlantic, from the Delaware Valley through Baltimore and DC to the Virginia hills. Pub-band heartland, never short of fiddles or thirst, and the run to Christmas is stacked: a holiday show turning sixteen, a three-day indoor hooley in Timonium and touring heavyweights booked through March.

Jamison have been Philly’s Celtic rock workhorses since 2003, and their An American Celtic Christmas turns 16 this year: the band, Irish dancers and special guests at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside on Saturday, December 19 (7:30pm). Warm up at Harrigan’s in Hatboro (November 6) or Ladder 15 on Sansom Street (November 21).

Kyf Brewer’s Barleyjuice play Friday and Saturday nights at the Maryland Irish Festival (November 13–15, Cow Palace, Timonium). Saturday evening runs Barleyjuice, The ShamRogues, Jamison and Screaming Orphans back to back, with Maryland’s Gaelic Mishap, Celtica Nova, Waking Finnegan and Ren Faire rabble-rousers The Hooligans across the weekend. Proceeds go to Irish Charities of Maryland, so drink up.

DC-area folk-rockers Scythian dig out the knitwear for their annual Ugly Christmas Sweater shows: Bright Box Theater in Winchester (December 4), Floyd Country Store (December 5) and the Southern Cafe & Music Hall in Charlottesville (December 11), then Musikfest Cafe in Bethlehem, PA (December 12). They’ve also revived their lockdown-era livestreams, free every Wednesday.

Harrisburg’s Kilmaine Saints marked 17 years by taping their March 14 St. Patrick’s blowout at XL Live, and the result, Until We Run It Dry, is out on CD and vinyl. It’s deliberately not on streaming, so buy the thing.

Richmond’s Celtic-tinged folk-rock lifers Carbon Leaf (yes, “The Boxer” lot) close out the year on home turf: the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville (November 21), World Stage in Philly (December 3), Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis (December 11–13), the Birchmere in Alexandria (December 17–18) and The National in Richmond (December 19).
