Back across the Hudson for round two of our New York & New Jersey scene report. A Bronx-bred family band has a new record out, New York’s thirstiest band has found a few more taps to drain before Christmas, and the 2027 diary is filling up fast, with St. Patrick’s week shaping up as a pub crawl from Brooklyn to Irving Plaza. Here’s what’s new since our last visit.
Sibling act Celtic Cross (Kathleen Fee, John Vesey and Ken Vesey) started out playing Bronx pubs as teenagers back in 1990, and they’re back with Meet Me in the Kitchen, a six-track EP out since October 9. It’s named for the family kitchen where their Mayo and Longford parents poured the tea, the whiskey and the stories, and it runs from the title track and “Dancin’ Belfast” to the instrumental “JFK Set” and “Slán Go Fóill (Goodbye For Now).” Ken’s fiddle and John’s box still do the heavy lifting, with a Nashville gloss from the sessions they cut at Curb Studios. We first caught this lot on Bainbridge Ave., in the early-’90s. Good to see the kitchen door is still open.
Shilelagh Law have squeezed more stops into the holiday diary we flagged last month. The Greenburgh Firefighters present them at Captain Lawrence Brewing Company in Elmsford on Friday, November 20 (7pm), and there’s “an intimate evening” at JA Heneghan’s Tavern in Point Lookout on Friday, December 4 (8pm). The Christmas in NY show at Connolly’s (December 18) is still on, and on February 26 they’re raiding The Dubliner in Boston. Brave men.
Joanie Madden’s Cherish the Ladies work the home turf into December: the Suffolk Theater in Riverhead (November 27), two shows at Tarrytown Music Hall (December 12, 4pm and 8pm), the Shea Center at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ (December 13, 3pm) and the Jeanne Rimsky Theatre in Port Washington (December 15). Not a power chord in sight, but nobody does a reel better.
