The Boston Music Awards shortlist landed last Friday, and the Hub’s Celtic punk and Irish rock lot are all over it. Public voting is open through November 16 at bostonmusicawards.com, with the winners crowned at Big Night Live on December 16. Here’s your fortnightly New England round-up. Vote early, vote often (you can’t, it’s one vote each, but you get the spirit).
Dropkick Murphys pick up four nominations: Live Artist of the Year, Punk/Hardcore Artist of the Year, Album/EP of the Year (1 million+ streams) for New England Forever, their split EP with Boston hardcore crew Haywire, and Song of the Year (1 million+ streams) for “Citizen I.C.E.” The Burren Backroom in Davis Square is also up for Music Venue of the Year (under 250 capacity), which feels about right.
Kier Byrnes & The Kettle Burners make it two award nods in one month. After the New England Music Awards nomination, the accordion-and-chicken-pickin’ outfit are up for Americana Artist of the Year at the BMAs. Fresh in the diary: the New England Americana Festival’s Songwriter Showcase at Medford Brewing Company on Friday, December 11 (5:30pm, a benefit for Boston Children’s Hospital), and après-ski at The Stone Hearth, Ragged Mountain, Danbury, NH, on Saturday, March 6, 2027 (3–6pm). Polka on the slopes. Mind your knees.
Boston balladeers Irish Whispa have been doing the Dubliners, Clancys and Wolfe Tones proud since 2011, with Kenmare man Michael on accordion. They’ve a Cape Cod habit to feed: O’Sheas Olde Inne, 348 Main Street, West Dennis, on Fridays, November 20 and December 18 (8:30pm).
