This Is Lorelei Digs Out The Popes’ The Song With No Name

Everybody covers The Pogues. Hardly anybody touches Shane MacGowan & The Popes. Nate Amos, the New York songwriter behind This Is Lorelei, just did, taking a solo voice-and-guitar run at “The Song With No Name” in a live session SiriusXM posted this week.

The tune was a 1994 Popes single, cut in Shane’s wilderness years after the Pogues sacked him in 1991 and long before the 2001 reunion. He built it on the melody of “The Homes of Donegal,” Seán McBride’s 1955 ballad. Amos strips it right back and lets the words carry it. Slipknot shirt and all.

He’s out promoting The Singer In My Band, his new album on Matador. Nice to see the Snake-era songs finding fresh ears.
