Kate Nash, yes, the “Foundations” Kate Nash, has made an Irish punk record, and it’s no flirtation. Cailín, her sixth album, lands January 22 on Kill Rock Stars, eleven years in the making and cut on Ireland’s west coast at Stiúideo Cuan with trad man Charlie Lennon keeping watch.
Second single “Freedom Of Me” is out now, Nash on tin whistle (her first instrument) taking a hammer to the far right’s favourite free-speech line. The Dublin-shot video has her strapped into a medieval Heretic’s Fork. Grim, and on purpose.
The tracklist packs “Póg Mo Thóin,” “Irish Saints” and her take on Sinéad O’Connor’s “Famine,” with Niamh Dunne and Biird’s Lisa Canny on fiddle, flute, bodhrán and banjo.
North American dates start November 3 at Arts at the Armory in Somerville, then run through Philly, New York, DC, Toronto and Chicago to San Diego on the 16th.
