The 20th Century Paddy drip-feed rolls on. Cork’s LYRA releases her take on The Pogues’ “Streets of Sorrow / Birmingham Six” this Friday, the next single off the 36-track Shane MacGowan tribute out November 13 on Rubyworks.
Electro-pop meets one of the angriest songs in the Pogues canon: Terry Woods’ lament sliding into Shane’s fury over the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four frame-ups, the track Britain’s broadcast regulator banned in 1988. Brave pick. We’ll judge Friday.
She joins a tracklist already carrying Springsteen’s “A Rainy Night in Soho,” U2’s “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” and Dropkick Murphys’ “The Body of an American,” with Damien Dempsey, Madra Salach, Steve Earle and The Pogues themselves also on board. At least half the artist royalties go to the Dublin Simon Community.
