Frankie McLaughlin’s one-man wrecking crew Liptons Orphan is back on Bandcamp with Come Ahead, a sharp turn from September’s stark Pain Management. Come ahead is Glasgow for “go on then, have a go,” and the cover says the same thing with a skull-ringed middle finger.
This one’s a snarling Scots singalong aimed at a “Leper King in all his gory decay” and the hacks hammering him up and down the airwaves on a slow news day. The chorus is built for a packed bar: “Famine, feast or fire? … I’d rather be a leper than a liar.” Written, arranged and produced by Frankie himself, the ex-Rumjack keeps the folk-punk gravel and the gallus attitude turned all the way up.
